GATE 2027 registration fees are ₹1,000 for one paper and ₹2,000 for two papers for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates. All other candidates pay ₹2,000 for one paper and ₹4,000 for two. The regular window closed on 5 October 2026. The late-fee window is open until 12 Oct 2026, and during it each amount is ₹500 higher. This guide from Gate At Zeal Indore lists the amounts, dates and payment rules shown on the official GATE 2027 website as of 8 October 2026.

All amounts are in rupees (₹). Two-paper figures are the total for two papers.

Who pays the reduced fee

Female candidates, and SC, ST and PwD candidates, pay the reduced row. The official page defines PwD as persons with benchmark disability. Everyone else pays the full fee, including General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and foreign nationals.

Foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad pay the full fee, but they must choose exam cities within India, according to the official FAQ.

If you claim a reduced category, keep your certificate ready as a clear, readable PDF. The official documents page asks for an SC or ST certificate, and a UDID or PwD certificate. It lists no certificate for female candidates.

How to pay the GATE 2027 fee

For Indian nationals, registration through DigiLocker is mandatory, according to the official documents page. A verified DigiLocker account shows a blue verification checkmark. If your mobile number is linked to more than one DigiLocker account, sign in with the verified one. If both accounts are unverified, verify one on the DigiLocker website first, then return to the portal.

Registration takes four steps:

  1. Sign in to the GATE Online Application Processing System with your verified account.
  2. Fill in the form: your personal details, your parent or guardian’s name and mobile number, your degree details with the institute’s PIN code, your test paper or papers, and six exam cities from the same zone.
  3. Add your live photo and signature, and upload any category certificate. The photo must be no larger than 530 × 690 pixels and 600 KB, and the signature no larger than 580 × 180 pixels and 300 KB. SC and ST candidates upload CATEGORY.pdf to the GATE2027 folder in DigiLocker. PwD candidates upload a UDID certificate named UDID_CERT.pdf or a PwD certificate named PWD_CERT.pdf. General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates upload no category certificate. Unreadable uploads may lead to rejection of your candidature.
  4. Pay once the form is complete. The payment option appears only after the form is filled in, and you can choose any listed payment option. Service charges, processing fees and bank charges are borne by the candidate, so the total you pay can be more than the amount in the fee table.

Keep your acknowledgement after you pay. If money is debited and no acknowledgement arrives, the official FAQ says it is credited back, which may take about fifteen working days.

Foreign nationals use a separate official link. The guideline page links to video walkthroughs for the Indian and foreign-national routes, so watch the one that fits you if a step is unclear.

Two papers and changes after you apply

The second paper adds ₹1,000 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹2,000 for all other candidates, in either window.

If you want a second paper after you have paid, use the same enrolment ID. The official FAQ says not to create a new one.

Changes cost extra. The FAQ says changes to paper, exam city or category are accepted only after the last application date, and for an additional fee. The dates will be announced later, and later requests are not considered. If you chose the wrong paper, you can change it later for an additional fee per change, within a period listed on the official important dates page. Name spelling errors can also be corrected later, within a set window, using supporting documents. The dates page lists 14 to 21 October 2026 as the window to correct your application details.

Every candidate chooses six exam cities from the same zone. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad must choose cities within India, and foreign nationals must bring their passport for verification on exam day.

Refunds and failed payments

The official FAQ says application fees are not refunded if you withdraw. Its question about getting the fee back after withdrawal is answered with a plain NO.

A failed payment is handled differently. If a payment fails because of a power or internet cut, log in again and check the payment status. If GATE did not receive the money, you can make a fresh payment.

If money is debited but no acknowledgement arrives, it is credited back. Extra payments for one application are returned automatically to the same bank account. The FAQ says both kinds of return may take about fifteen working days.

Service charges, processing fees and bank charges are borne by the candidate, so budget for them as part of the cost.

Check the payment status before you try again after any failed attempt. That one check helps you avoid a second charge, and any extra amount takes about fifteen working days to come back.

Mistakes that add cost

Four mistakes cost money or a registration window. All four come from the official pages linked below.

  1. Choosing the wrong paper and paying to change it later. Each change carries an additional fee and happens in a window that is announced later, so pick your paper or papers before you pay.
  2. Claiming a reduced category without the certificate ready. SC, ST and PwD candidates need their certificate to get the fee concession, and it must be a clear, readable PDF in the GATE2027 folder in DigiLocker. The official page does not say what happens if a claimed category turns out to be wrong, so do not claim a category you cannot document.
  3. Paying again without checking the payment status. If a payment fails, log in and check first. An extra payment comes back to the same bank account, but that can take about fifteen working days.
  4. Ignoring a defective photo or signature. If the photo or signature does not meet the specifications, the application is marked DEFECTIVE and you are notified by email, SMS or phone. You can upload a new image up to a deadline. After that, the application is treated as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED.

The extended window closes on 12 October 2026, and the official dates page lists no new registration window after it.
