For most candidates, no. Two months is enough to revise and practise a syllabus you already know, but not to learn a full GATE paper from scratch. It can work if you know most of your paper’s topics, can study six to eight focused hours a day, and spend the final weeks on timed practice.
Count the days before you decide. The first exam weekend is 6 to 7 February 2027, so a plan that starts today has about four months. This guide from Gate At Zeal Indore explains how to test whether two months fits your situation, what a week-by-week plan looks like, and what to do if you have less time.
Two months from when? The GATE 2027 calendar
Two months only means something once you fix a start date. The first exam weekend is 6–7 February 2027, with more on 13–14 and 20–21 February.
| Start date | Days until 6 February 2027 | What the time allows |
|---|---|---|
| 8 October 2026 (today) | 121 days, about four months | A full syllabus, mock tests and revision |
| 6 December 2026 | 62 days, about two months | Revision and practice for a syllabus you already know |
| 6 January 2027 | 31 days, about one month | Mock tests and error correction only |
Three other dates matter for planning. The late registration window closes on 12 October 2026, city allotment is notified on 4 January 2027, and results are announced on 19 March 2027. The admit card date is not yet announced, so check the official important dates page before you plan your final week.
What decides whether two months is enough
Five factors matter more than the number of months. Check each one honestly before you set your start date.
| Factor | Two months works if | Two months falls short if |
|---|---|---|
| Background | You studied most of your paper’s core subjects in your degree | Core subjects are new to you and must be learned first |
| Syllabus | You know your paper’s syllabus well | You have not read the syllabus, or it has topics you have not studied |
| Daily hours | You can study six to eight focused hours a day | Study time competes with work or classes |
| Practice material | You have previous-year questions and mock tests for your paper | You must write your own questions from scratch |
| Revised topics | You have checked which topics are new for your paper | You are using last year’s material without checking the changes |
GATE 2027 revised the syllabus for several papers, and some new topics have little previous-year material. Check the list for your paper first, using the revised syllabus study plan guide. A two-month plan leaves less room to learn new topics, so start with them.

Who can realistically do it in two months
Two months suits a candidate who already knows most of the syllabus and needs to turn that knowledge into marks. This usually means a degree in the paper’s branch, core subjects studied recently, and a routine you can keep for eight weeks.
Plan for more time if one of these applies: you are learning core subjects from zero, you work full time, or your paper has several new topics you have not studied. In those cases, two months will not leave enough time to cover the syllabus, so choose a paper you know better or plan for a later GATE cycle.
A 2 months GATE study plan, week by week
Eight weeks fit between 6 December 2026 and 1 February 2027, which leaves about five days of buffer before the first exam weekend.
| Week | Focus | What you finish |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | New topics in your paper first, then the highest-weightage core subjects | Short notes for each topic and a topic test |
| 3–4 | The rest of the syllabus, one topic at a time | A first pass through every topic, with wrong answers logged |
| 5 | Previous-year questions by topic, timed | Accuracy for each topic in an error log |
| 6 | Mixed sets across topics, plus General Aptitude daily | A list of your five weakest topics |
| 7 | Two to three full-length mock tests | Mock analysis: wrong answers by topic and by reason |
| 8 | Re-solve the error log, then light revision | A one-page sheet of formulas and rules for the final days |
A workable day at six hours has three hours of new study, two of practice and one of reviewing wrong answers. Keep an error log: each wrong answer, its topic and the reason it went wrong. General Aptitude belongs in daily practice, since it carries 15 marks in every paper.
Before you use a mock series, check that it covers the GATE 2027 syllabus, not last year’s.
Mistakes that make two months feel shorter
Four habits waste the most time in a short plan.
- Starting with the subject you enjoy instead of the new topics and high-weightage subjects in your paper.
- Re-reading notes instead of solving questions. Recognising a formula feels like progress, but GATE scores answers, not familiarity.
- Saving full mock tests for the final week. Early mocks show which topics need the most time, while there is still room to change the plan.
- Guessing on MCQs without a rule. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs one-third of a mark and a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs two-thirds, so guess only when you can rule out at least one option. MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking, but neither earns partial marks.

If you have less time: registration and choosing your paper
Decide your paper before you pay. Changes to paper, exam city or category cost an additional fee and are accepted only after the last application date, and withdrawing does not refund the application fee. If you have not registered yet, the late window closes on 12 October 2026, and every fee amount in that window is ₹500 higher.
With less time, choose a paper whose syllabus you can cover, and start with its new topics and highest-weightage subjects. Do not drop topics entirely, because questions can come from any part of the syllabus. Check the official application fees page for the exact amounts before you pay.
Two-month GATE preparation FAQs
Is 2 months enough for GATE preparation?
For most candidates, no. Two months works when you already know most of the syllabus and need to practise and revise. Learning a full paper from scratch needs more time.
How many months do I need for GATE preparation?
It depends on your starting point. The revised syllabus study plan guide sets out a five-month route from September. From today, about four months remain before the first exam weekend on 6 February 2027.
How many hours a day should I study in 2 months?
Six to eight focused hours a day gives about 360 to 480 hours over roughly 60 days. That covers new study, practice and revision.
Is General Aptitude common to all GATE papers?
Yes. General Aptitude has 10 questions worth 15 marks in every paper: five 1-mark and five 2-mark questions.
How does negative marking work in GATE?
Only MCQs carry negative marking. One-third of a mark is deducted for a wrong 1-mark answer and two-thirds for a wrong 2-mark answer. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking and no partial marks.

Can I start GATE preparation in December for the February 2027 exam?
Yes. Starting on 6 December 2026 leaves 62 days, about two months, before the first exam weekend. Follow the week-by-week plan above, and start with your paper’s new topics.
